Supreme Court Rules Against Public Sector Unions

Late last month, the United States Supreme ruled that it’s unconstitutional for the government to require public-sector employees to pay union dues. In the 5-4 decision of Janus v. AFSCME, the Supreme Court determined that making it mandatory for employees to pay union dues violates the First Amendment right not to fund political speech with which one may disagree, even if the fees are going towards collective bargaining and not explicitly for political activities. Public employees already had the ability to opt out of funding a union’s political activities.
