More Threatening Labor Legislation Introduced
As you may recall, Sen. Bernie Sanders’s (I-VT) and Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI) recently introduced a labor law reform bill, known as the Workplace Democracy Act, that included almost every desired reform on the unions wish list. Not to be outdone, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) recently introduced the Workers’ Freedom to Negotiate Act of 2018, which includes many of the same provisions as the Sanders bill, but is even more sweeping. Some of the provisions include codification of the “ambush” election rule, implementation of the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces “blacklisting” scheme, as well as the Board’s failed notice posting regulations. While these bills have no chance of moving in the current Congress, they demonstrate the kind of provisions that could be considered should there be a political shift on Capitol Hill or in the White House.
In response to the Sanders bill, the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace (CDW) started a campaign to demonstrate how misguided these policies are. Part of which included this ad, which was placed in the USA Today. Similarly, the CDW will work to educate members of Congress on the dangers of the Schumer bill as well.
