House Passes Perkins Legislation

On Thursday, May 22, the House of Representatives passed by voice vote the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act (H.R. 2353). The bill, introduced by Reps. Glenn “G.T.” Thompson (R-PA) and Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), reauthorizes the Perkins Act, which provides states $1 billion in support of career and technical education programs in high schools and is the largest federal program supporting career and technical education.

The same bill was passed in 2016 by the House by a vote of 405-5, but it stalled in the Senate. As of now, timing and prospects for Senate consideration remains unclear. IEC will continue to work with the Jobs and Careers Coalition to move Perkins through the legislative process.
