Planning the Cabling Infrastructure for PoE and Low-Voltage Lighting

IP convergence is here and it’s changing the way the cabling infrastructure is being designed and installed. Previously many disparate applications (i.e. security, access control, HVAC, lighting and telecommunications) resided on segmented and dedicated networks. Today’s converged network utilizes Ethernet to create an intelligent building incorporating both data and power over a common cabling infrastructure.

This presentation will include the latest information on cabling standards, effects of PoE on the cable and connectivity and different layout considerations to include the following topics:

  • Understanding power (PoE) and bandwidth challenges
  • Update on resources (such as standards and codes)
  • How the selection of proper cabling types-- copper and fiber – can affect delivery of efficient data and power to the device.
  • Different layouts of lighting systems – centralized and de-centralized
