Independent Electrical Contractors
Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC) is a nonprofit trade association federation with 53 educational campuses and affiliate local chapters across the country. IEC represents more than 4,100 member businesses and educates over 17,000 electrical apprentices each year through world-class training programs:
Provides networking and professional development opportunities for electrical contractors and their teams.
Advocates for the electrical construction industry at local, state, and national levels.
Offers resources and support for workforce development, safety standards, and industry best practices.
Founded in 1957 as the Associated Independent Electrical Contractors of America, the primary goal of the original association was to consider and deal with, by all lawful means, common problems of management, distribution, employment, and financial functions of the electrical construction industry; to foster cooperation in advancing the common purposes of its members; and to promote activities that enabled the industry to advance with the greatest economy and efficiency.
The association’s first offices were located in Texas, and in 1962, IEC was granted a certificate of incorporation. IEC convinced the U.S. Department of Labor to adopt national pattern standards of Apprenticeship and Training, and for the first time, registered apprenticeship was recognized across the country for those adopting the “Open Shop” or “Merit Shop” philosophy.
The association will continue to expand its services to members and serve as a strong voice for independent electrical and systems contractors on the many issues that affect the industry.
Our vision is to educate and grow our merit shop workforce, to help our contractors adapt to the ever-changing needs of the electrical workforce, and to increase IEC’s influence and presence within the electrical industry.

The IEC Annual Report provides a snapshot of the organization’s achievements, accomplishments, and milestones in the year. Each year, IEC endeavors to expand our footprint in education, advocacy, membership, and industry partnerships, and the annual report provides a guidepost for where the association is currently, and where we aim to go in the future.
