First, do you have what it takes?
 The nature of the job demands that an electrician be in good physical condition and tolerant of working in varied climatic conditions such as heat, cold, rain, and snow. Other environmental factors include exposure to heights using ladders and scaffolds, risk of electrical shock, and lifting and moving heavy objects.

You must have a high school diploma or G.E.D and have good employability skills.

You must have a reliable source of transportation to school and to the job site.

You must be able to work independently and as a member of a team.
How to Apply
The application process varies by location so this is a general scenario. Please contact a location near you for their procedures.

Complete an application at your local IEC chapter office – check with local chapter for times and locations.

Pay a nominal application fee (usually $10-20 depending on location).

Work for an IEC contractor or if you are seeking a job, speak with the chapter office about placement with a local contractor.

Be a high school graduate, possess a GED, or be a high school youth apprentice.

Have a reliable form of transportation (preferably your own car), to get to and from classes and job sites.

Take a math assessment test (varies by location).

Attend a program orientation.
Though not guaranteed, in many cases, employers pay for all or part of your training program and textbooks – plus you get paid to work full-time as an apprentice.
